Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information RainbowReporter ("the App," "we," "us") collects, how it's used, who we share it with, and the choices and controls you have over it, including how to delete your data entirely.

Information We Collect

• Account information. If you create an account, we collect your email address and password to sign you in. You can also continue as a guest without providing any of that. Guest accounts don't collect an email address at all.
• Username. Registered users pick a public username that shows up on the rainbow reports they submit. Guests can't set a username.
• Location. The App asks for your permission before accessing your device's precise location, and only uses it to check rainbow conditions near you and to show and submit sightings tied to a place. You can type in a ZIP code or town name instead if you'd rather not share device location, and you can deny or revoke location access anytime in your device settings without losing access to the App. Registered users can also save a home, work, or other named location to get notified about rainbows there. Guests can only get alerts for their current location.
• Photos. You can optionally attach a photo when reporting a sighting. The App asks for camera or photo library permission only when you choose to attach one, and it's entirely optional. Photos you upload are stored on our servers and are visible to other users alongside that report, same as the report's text.
• Rainbow reports. When you submit a sighting, we store its location, timestamp, your username (if you've set one), and any note or photo you add. Reports show up for other users of the App in the Nearby Sightings feed. Sharing sightings with people nearby is the whole point of the App, so this data is meant to be seen by others.
• Push notification token. If you allow notifications when asked, we store a token that lets us send alerts to your device about nearby rainbow sightings. You can decline this permission and still use the rest of the App.

We only ask for the data above because the App's core features genuinely need it. We don't collect anything beyond that, and none of the App's functionality is paywalled behind granting a permission you'd rather not give.

How We Use Information

We use the information above to run the App: predicting rainbow likelihood, showing and sharing sightings, sending the notifications you've opted into, and keeping your account working. We don't use your information for advertising, and we don't sell your personal information to anyone.

Third-Party Services

The App leans on a few outside services to work, and no other third parties receive your personal information beyond what's needed for them to provide these services to us:

• Supabase handles authentication, our database, and file storage. Account and report data described above lives on Supabase's infrastructure.
• OpenWeatherMap gets your location (or the ZIP/town you typed in) sent to it so we can pull current weather conditions for the rainbow prediction.
• Expo's push notification service delivers push notifications to your device.

Guest Accounts

Using the App as a guest doesn't require an email address or username, and guests can't submit rainbow reports or save a home, work, or other location. Guests can still get notifications about their current location and browse nearby sightings.

Your Choices and Rights

• Turn location access on or off anytime in your device settings. Without it, the App falls back to a ZIP code or town you enter manually.
• Turn notifications on or off per location, or entirely, from the Profile screen or your device settings.
• Delete your account anytime right from the app, no email or support request needed: open the Profile screen and tap "Delete Account." This immediately and permanently removes your profile and every rainbow report you've submitted, including any photos, from our servers. It can't be undone.
• If you'd rather email us to ask about, correct, or delete your data instead, reach out at contact@rainbowreporter.app and we'll take care of it.

Reporting and Blocking

Rainbow reports from other users, including any photos and notes, are visible to you in the Nearby Sightings feed. If you come across content that shouldn't be there, tap "Report" on that sighting right in the app, which sends its details to contact@rainbowreporter.app for our moderators to review. You can also email us directly. We'll remove content that violates our Terms of Service, which covers what's not allowed.

You can also tap "Block" on any sighting to block the user who posted it. Once blocked, you won't see their sightings anymore, and they won't see yours. You can view and undo your blocks anytime from the Profile screen.

Data Retention

We keep your account and report information for as long as your account is active, or until you delete it as described above.

Children's Privacy

RainbowReporter isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect your information, but no method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the "last updated" date above. Using the App after a change means you accept the update.
